Larp 101: The Game » Throwing Chops
When in-character (IC) social interaction no longer provides the appropriate avenue for conflict resolution, we must step out-of-character (OOC). Some roleplaying games rely on dice or playing cards to introduce an element of chance into these moments. Our game uses an even simpler technique: rock, paper, scissors (aka throwing chops or throwing a symbol).
In Carpé Noctem we go on three, not after three. That is, your symbol should be displayed for your opponent to see on the count of three, not on the beat after three. The video on the right illustrates this point. You should also try to avoid broadcasting which is giving a hint about what symbol you're about to throw. Broadcasting is most difficult with scissors.
Like most games of rock, paper, scissors, the following holds true:
- Paper wraps Rock
- Rock smashes Scissors
- Scissors cut Paper
But in the video you can see that there is a fourth symbol in Carpé Noctem available to some players called the Bomb. The bomb is displayed using the classic "thumbs-up" symbol—a closed fist with an extended thumb. The Bomb destroys Rock and Paper but the fuse is cut by Scissors.
